If a celebrity weds in an intimate backyard ceremony and Us Weekly photographers aren’t around to capture it, did the nuptials really happen?
It’s an age-old question that deserves an answer, especially now that more and more A-listers are choosing to bypass over-the-top, Kardashian-esque ceremonies in favor of more subdued—and secret—events.
In some cases, the guests aren’t even aware they’re about to see the happy couple say, “I do.” For example, in 2004, Britney Spears and dancer Kevin Federline tricked the paparazzi by switching dates and locales at the very last minute. The 27 invited guests, including Spears’ own mother, thought they were attending an engagement bash, but… surprise! Friends and family were there to watch the couple make it official.
Then there’s Julia Roberts. Sure, her first wedding to country crooner Lyle Lovett was a shock to most fans, but her second trip down the aisle was equally unexpected. On July 4, 2002, pals and relatives thought they were attending an Independence Day BBQ at the actresses’ 82-acre ranch in Taos, New Mexico; instead, they got to see Roberts, dressed in a pale pink cotton halter dress, wed cameraman Danny Moder.
Loose lips may sink ships, but check out the following celebrity couples that were able to successfully keep their weddings a secret.
