For US soccer fans, at least in this case, winning isn’t necessarily everything.
In advance of today’s World Cup soccer match between the USA and Germany, it almost felt like you needed an advanced degree in mathematics to understand the various scenarios by which the Americans would advance to the next round of the tournament.
I’ll keep it simple for you.
Despite winning only 1 of the 3 games they’ve played thus far, the most recent being today’s loss to the #2 ranked German squad 1-0, they’re still advancing to the next round of the tournament!
Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Ghana today was all we needed, which feels right given our disappointment a few days ago when Portugal scored in the last-minute of play to tie the US team 2-2.
Thank you Cristiano Ronaldo!
But really, who cares how they advance at this point? It’s like the NHL in a way. Just make the next round and see what happens!
Congrats to US coach Jurgen Klinsmann, who shocked fans and his team before the tournament even started by telling everyone who would listen that his team “cannot win the World Cup”.
If it was meant to motivate the squad, it seems to have worked.
They’ll now play the winner of the game between Belgium and Algeria on Tuesday of next week.
Job well done USA!
I haven’t seen this much excitement around here about soccer since the days of Carl Rose, Donny Ebert and the St. Louis Steamers of the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL)
