OK, now it’s on.
It’s apparent these two teams dislike each other. That’s OK, they always have and they always will.
But what happened toward the end of the Blues Game 2 overtime win Saturday at Scottrade Center, has now taken this rivalry into “St.Patrick’s Day Massacre” territory.
Even former Hawk tough guy Stu “The Grim Reaper” Grimson, a player who struck fear in everyone he played against, (as well as the concession guy selling popcorn) had to be thinking to himself,
By now, you’ve either seen or heard about the nasty, cowardly hit Chicago defenseman Brent Seabrook put on Blues captain David Backes towards the end of the third period. It was a brutal headshot, the kind which the NHL has been trying to rid itself of over the years.
UPDATE: Seabrook was suspended for three games by the NHL earlier today.
You could almost hear the air go out of the arena (except of course for the classless Chicago fans in attendance who were cheering.)
To his credit, Backes tried to regain his footing and go after Seabrook, however it was clear to everyone watching that he was badly hurt, and almost certainly concussed.
That is everyone except Blackhawks Defenseman Duncan Keith, who seemed to find humor in the situation.
Listen carefully at around :45 of the video.
“Wakey Wakey Backes…Wakey Wakey!”
Keith was interviewed afterwards and like a child caught with his hand in the cookie jar, he deflects, evades, obfuscates…
“There are lots of things that get said out on the ice in the course of a hockey game — especially in the playoffs,” Keith said after Monday’s morning skate in preparation for Game 3 at the United Center. “I’m an emotional guy, it’s an emotional game. I don’t remember everything that gets said out there.”
“I don’t remember”?
Sure sounds like he doesn’t want to talk about it doesn’t it? And this was a Chicago reporter asking the questions!
Imagine if we turned Chris Kerber or Kelly Chase loose on this guy.
And now we have this:
That’s right, for the low, low price of $17, you too can mock the Backes’s concussion. Because as everyone knows, brain injuries are funny!
I’ll go ahead and say it, I only unveil this one for that rare, special kind of outrage.
Revenge? Forget about it for now. The Blues are up 2-0 in the series versus an outmatched and mentally inferior opponent. The Hawks would like nothing better than for us to come out and take a bunch of cheap, nonsensical penalties.
No, that’s the Chicago way.
Just win the series, prepare the next opponent and file it away for next season.
BTW, Seabrook was quoted as saying that he hopes Backes isn’t seriously hurt and that he’s not the kind of player who tries to injure another.
Yeah, he looks really broken up about it doesn’t he?
