I’ll admit it up front, I can’t be objective when it comes to Sarah McLachlan.
She is an artist who I probably would never have discovered, if not for the fact that back in the late 90’s, my then serious girlfriend (now wife) was a huge fan.
Which meant I was also a fan.
Then again, I was so smitten with her (my wife) that I probably would have sat through an entire Debbie Boone retrospective, if that’s what it took.
Fortunately for me, I ended up actually really liking her music. I watched her make the transition from a small singer-songwriter type to a woman who founded an entire musical movement and accompanying tour.
By the Fall of 1998, I was working at a job which put me in contact with most of the major record labels (including Sarah’s) so I was able to call in a big favor when it came time for me to pop the question.
The ring had been picked out, the restaurant reservation was booked…I had even made a very nervous trip over to my future in-laws home to ask for their nod of approval.
Everything was set, but I had one more card to play.
Hanging in the restaurant, as I very clumsily asked her to marry me was this gift from Sarah herself.
“Greg has FALLEN for the last time. (At the time, her latest single was titled, “Fallen”)
I think you should MARRY HIM!
All the best of love and happiness,
Success! She even followed up with a congratulatory phone call.
14 years later, still the best decision I have ever made. And this portrait still hangs in our living room today.
Thanks Sarah, I still owe you one
