Remember a few months ago when I told you about a documentary that would finally bring the “unknown” backup singers to the forefront?
Well, in case you missed it last night, that documentary, “20 Feet From Stardom,” won the Academy Award for documentary feature.
The film that is way overdue. One voice that is predominantly featured in the film is that of Merry Clayton.
You may not know her name, but I guarantee you’ve heard her voice. If you have ever heard Joe Cocker’s “With a Little Help From My Friends,” David Bowie’s “Young Americans,” “Respect” from Aretha Franklin, or The Rolling Stones “Gimmie Shelter.” Shall I go on? You’ve heard her voice but didn’t even realize it.
This film, finally, puts a face to some of the most widely used backup singers in the business.
Here’s an interview with Merry Clayton.
Here’s the official trailer!
