Playoffs? We’re talking PLAYOFFS?
You bet we are. It’s becoming old hat around these parts. Seems like every October, the Cardinals are, at the very least, invited to the dance. (And by dance, I mean the MLB playoffs. Sports guys like to use this word a lot in this context for some reason.)
We may not always go home happy so to speak, but we’re usually there, nervously circling the dance floor waiting for the opportunity to show off our moves.
Compared to most teams, like our first round opponent Pittsburgh Pirates, just getting that invitation is reason to break out the party hats. The Pirates and their long-suffering fans have not seen October baseball since…get ready for it, 1992!
Can you imagine if we, the self-proclaimed best fans in baseball, would cope with that level of mediocrity? Actually, you can if, like me, you’ve been here for a while.
Believe it or not, the Cardinals went 13 years without making a playoff appearance. It’s hard to describe that sort of futility to anyone who was born after 1982. All they’ve known for the most part (with the exception of the late 80’s early 90’s) is winning baseball. Playoff baseball.
To say that some of the “BFIB” are spoiled is not an exaggeration. Don’t believe me? Just listen to any of the 27 sports talk shows going on in town at any given moment or follow the team on Facebook or Twitter. We expect winning baseball and won’t tolerate anything less.
Which reminds me, on this special day for fans, of this little number from the Fall of 1985. Radio station KHTR’s homage to a team which eventually would break our hearts on a cold, October night in Kansas City.
Enjoy the dance!
