The term Catfish: definition from Urban Dictionary:
If you haven’t seen the show ‘Catfish’ on MTV yet, I highly, highly recommend it. Entertaining, absolutely! But it’s also a great reminder about the anonymity of the internet, especially with the people you meet, or get to know over social media. Are they who they say they are?? Are you sure?? ‘Catfish’ shows that, if you’re in a full-blown online relationship, and for one reason or another, excuse after weird excuse, you never actually meet up in person…chances are the person you’re in a relationship with is not who they say they are.
Now you’re thinking, “Well, come on, Steph. I mean, who would be that stupid? Seriously…how could you NOT know something was fishy?” And this is where I point you to MTV.com, they have some full episodes.
Now…..a Hollywood actor/celebrity has been ‘Catfished.’ Thomas Gibson, he was Greg in ‘Dharma & Greg’ and he’s now on ‘Criminal Minds.’ Separated from his wife….he’s been in A TWO-YEAR online relationship with someone who introduced themselves to him through Twitter, as Thomas’ ‘biggest fan’ and a Porn Star. OF COURSE he responded!!
The details get squishy and embarrassing (home-made hot tub video of himself….alone…that he sent her…YIKES!!), but here’s the whole story…..so far. You just KNOW there’s more coming.
