Jennifer Lopez performed at a birthday celebration for the leader of the former Soviet Bloc country, Turkmenistan over the weekend. She went as far as to sing happy birthday to Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow (try to put that name into the melody of “happy birthday”)
The problem is Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow is one of the most repressive dictators in the world.
“Human Rights Watch” has this for the country’s profile:
“The country is virtually closed to independent scrutiny, Media and religious freedoms are subject to draconian restrictions, and human rights defenders and other activists face the constant threat of government reprisal. The authorities continue to use imprisonment as a tool for political retaliation and to restrict peoples’ right to travel freely.
After a United Nations visit last month, Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights Ivan Simonovic said the country had made progress in the area of human rights, but “a lot more work is needed to complete this process and to ensure practice is in line with international standards.”
J-Lo’s publicist released a statement that included: “Had there been knowledge of human rights issues any kind, Jennifer would not have attended.”
Here’s the video of J-Lo’s Happy Birthday, Mr. Dictator.
