One year ago today, the most famous celebrity baby, Blue Ivy Carter, was welcomed to the world. In honor of Beyonce and Jay-Z’s little bundle of joy’s first birthday, we’re taking a look back at the most eventful moments in her first year of life as pop star royalty.
#1. She made worldwide headlines before she was born
Even before she was born, baby Blue was the center of media attention when Beyonce revealed her pregnancy live onstage during a performance at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards.
A glowing Beyonce stepped onto the red carpet in a vibrant orange dress cradling her budding baby bump in front of snap-happy cameras. She later took to the stage for a performance in which she ended by ripping open her jacket to joyfully rub her baby bump to announce her first pregnancy. From that moment on, we knew Blue Ivy would become pop star royalty.
#2. She arrived in style
Being the daughter of two internationally-known music stars, Blue Ivy’s life was privileged and doused with luxury from the start. At the time of her birth, Blue Ivy was welcomed to the world in comfort and style inside a private $1.3 million executive suite at New York City’s Lenox Hill Hospital, which was likened to a five-star hotel.
The private suite caused some controversy for Beyonce and and Jay-Z however, with reports that the power couple rented out an entire hospital floor and hired security guards that prevented other parents from seeing their newborns. The hospital later denied those reports, and Blue Ivy was wrapped up in her first celebrity controversy.
#3. She set music records in the first week of her life
In true pop star fashion, Blue Ivy made her very first appearance on the Billboard charts before she was even able to utter a single word. Already taking after her parents, Blue went down in record books for being the youngest person to appear on the Billboard charts thanks to her dad’s ode titled “Glory,” which uses recordings of the delivery room cries when little B.I.C. was born.
The song debuted at #74 on the Rap/Hip-Hop Songs chart, and became the first official charted song to credit a baby’s cry. You may recall the Stevie Wonder song “Isn’t She Lovely” using the cries of his daughter Aisha in the beginning of the song, but she wasn’t credited on the song and it didn’t appear on the charts until two years later.
#4. She’s already a fashion icon
Blue Ivy is always seen stepping out with her mama in the latest designer fashion. She’s been seen touted around the streets of New York in her designer baby Bjorn wearing adorable silver Marc Jacobs Baby Mouse flats, and even sporting custom-made Ruthie Davis booties dazzled with over $800 in Swarovski crystals! Even at one-year-old, Blue Ivy is draped in chic designer duds.
#5. She watches the Brooklyn Nets in a $1 million private crib
The most recent Blue Ivy news came just last week when it was announced her dad, part-owner of the Brooklyn Nets, rented out a $1 million per year private crib in the basement of the Barclays Center.
According to Barclays, the private play suite has “an area for Blue filled with toys” and comes with lounge seating, flat screen TVs and elegant furniture so that when she’s not using it, her dad’s friends have a luxury suite to watch the game.
