The Twitterverse went wild on Tuesday when controversial actor Charlie Sheen decided to create an account on the social network. Word of the his Twitter account spread like wildfire.
It wasn’t long before he set the Guinness World Record for “Fastest Time to Reach 1 Million Followers.” Thanks to this accomplishment he now stands to make a large amount of cash with his tweets. Can we say… winning!
According to Guinness, it took Sheen a mere 25 hours and 17 minutes to break the record. Who held the title before? The category was actually created because of the rapid pace at which Sheen was attracting followers. Dan Barrett, Guinness community manager, says the agency thoroughly “researched and approved” his record.
After joining on March 1st, the actor accumulated over 60,000 followers without a single tweet. As of right now, @CharlieSheen has 1,365,229 followers. This number will surely change significantly in the next few minutes!
So what’s a guy with over a million followers and counting on Twitter and no TV show to do? Make a profit off of the social network, obviously. This might have been his intention from the beginning. Turns out Sheen enlisted the help of Ad.ly, which specializes in celebrity endorsements on Twitter, to kickstart his account. Ad.ly was responsible for getting his account verified so quickly.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sheen’s partnership with Ad.ly will earn him anywhere between $200 and $25,000 per tweet. So you might see Sheen tweeting about one of Ad.ly’s partners soon. They include Sony, Microsoft, Lionsgate, Microsoft and Old Navy.
The Kardashian clan are all too familiar with tweeting for some serious cash.
Most recently, Kourtney Kardashian saw a hefty payday for promoting Johnny Depp’s lackluster film The Tourist. ”If only all vacations were this exciting and included Johnny Depp! Check out the trailer for The Tourist,” tweeted the eldest Kardashian sister. And just like that… money in her pocket!
