This coming Friday, “Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows, Part 1″ will open. Most movie folks think will be the biggest movie of the year at the box office. This is the first part of a two-part finale (“Part 2” releases in July, 2011) and the reviews so far are in-step with the tone and tenor of the film: dark. Here are some critic samples:
—Harry, Ron and Hermione abandon the safety of Hogwarts in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” and so does this dark and despairing penultimate adaptation
—The Potter faithful won’t be deterred by “Part 1’s” bleak, inconclusive tenor
—Danger really does lurk behind every corner; there seems to be a fresh Death Eater attack every 10 minutes, and the body count mounts precipitously
—“Deathly Hallows” proceeds with a grim seriousness of purpose and a matter-of-fact creepiness, and the occasional moments of levity
That said it doesn’t appear crowds of fans will stay away. In fact since its London opening, crowds have been flocking to the film adding to the franchise that has already banked over 5 billion dollars. Check out the exciting trailer here.
