It’s almost five (5) years now since Sam Kaçar opened the doors to Trattoria Branica, (named after son BRANdon and daughter MonICA) at Lindbergh and Clayton Road in Le Chateau Village. Since then he has opened another location, down the street on Lindbergh in Kirkwood’s Woodbine Center and a third Tratorria Branica in the Chesterfield Bottoms. All three locations offer the same consistently good, creative menu and very, very reasonable prices. Ed recently visited the Kirkwood location for dinner. Sam would be termed your average, everyday workaholic. He can be found in the kitchen and on the floor the Kirkwood location everyday of the week – all seven of them. He takes whatever else time his has, or makes, and works with his staffs at the other two restaurants everyday also. And that schedule is not for lack of staff – it’s for his love of the kitchen and running a restaurant(s). With his background of hard work on cruise ships – where he started as a bus boy – to his running the kitchen at Al Bakers and Dominic’s (both The Hill and in Clayton) Sam’s always felt the urge to be totally involved – and it shows in the finished product.
Trattoria Branica’s menu is laid out just as you would expect an Italian menu to be laid out – by the course: Antipasto/Appetizer, Insalate/Salads, Primi/Pasta, Vitello/Veal, Pollo/Poultry, Pesce/Seafood and Arrosti/Steaks. Each course could be a meal in itself – the flavors are wonderful. On our visit last week, we got to taste a sampling of each, which were outstanding.
On our latest trip to food heaven, we sat outside on the wonderful patio at the Kirkwood location and enjoyed a sampling of some of Sam’s favorites. We started with some small plates – both classics: Scampi alla Griglia and lightly fried Calamari which was bite size and delicious. Those were followed by a family favorite, Eggplant Parmigiano. That was followed by the Tortelloni di Pollo (chicken) in a cream sauce with peas and mushrooms and a cheese stuffed Gnocchi in a wonderfully light and flavor-filled tomato sauce with basil. For our main courses – yes those were starters – we opted to share a simply, but deliciously, prepared Tenderloin in red wine sauce and Veal Saltimbocca (with prosciutto, mozzarella and sage). Pistachio and warm Chocolate Desserts and coffee followed. Wonderful from start to finish
Trattoria Branica is open seven nights a week and serves lunch from Monday through Friday, with as we said, a very moderately priced menu and comprehensive wine list that attracts a wide-ranging clientele. The Kirkwood location also features music – on the patio, weather permitting, and in the Wine Bar, year round. The Wine Bar, located immediately behind the Kirkwood restaurant, features a full bar and serves appetizers along with a good variety of local musicians. The music schedule changes, so call ahead for times and musician. There’s a large space also designated for private parties for up to 75.

All in all, we can’t say enough good things about Trattoria Branica. Put it on your list of “nights out” destinations – you’ll love it, regardless of which location you head to. Bring your friends and your appetite. Neither will be disappointed, guaranteed.
