At What Age Should a Child Get a Cell Phone?

OK, I think we would all agree that this little cutie is too young to have his own cell phone! Last night at my middle-school orientation meeting, the discussion turned to cell phone usage. My son has had a cell phone for a while now…read on to find out when he got his phone.

We got him one for his 10th birthday. He is at  many after school and evening activities…so having a cell phone makes it easier for me to keep up with him if he is getting out early or staying later. He is almost 12 now, and he still doesn’t use his phone a lot. He texts friends occasionally, but nothing crazy.

At his new middle school, cell phones are not allowed. If phones are at school, they must be in the lockets and turned off. If a child is caught with a cell phone, it is confiscated.

What do you think? Should kids have cell phones? What is the appropriate age for a kid to get a phone of his own?

I think it depends on the child. It is hard to put a firm age for across the board. You know how responsible your child is and what your family situation and schedule is like. It sounds like your son is responsible and is using his phone appropriately.
